Musa Ornata - A small banana plant native to S. E. Asia that grows to about 9'. The plant is perfect for container growing and will stay smaller as specimen for cooler climates. Nice lavender inflorescence opening to yellow -orange flowers that yield to yellow non edible fruits when ripe but the flowers must be hand pollinated for the full development. Leaves are narrow and oblong up to 2m long.
Hardy outdoors in zones 9-12. Start Seed in standard potting mix at 70-75° F, and grow in full sun with shade from hot direct burning sunlight. Water freely and fertilize once a month. Min temperature 45° F
Musa is actually classified a perennial herb
Partial to full sun with rich moist soil.
Needs high humidity.
Can be grown indoors in a container.
For reasons of pollination it is best to have more than one banana plant.
Often used in tropical cut flower arrangements.
Named after Antonio Musa a physician in the early Roman Empire.
