Heshiko Bunching Onion (Allium fistulosum)

Note: Seeds are shipped by first class letter or “Ground Advantage” package depending on order size

A prized heirloom Japanese bunching onion, 'Heshiko' is a perennial favorite celebrated for its exceptional cold-hardiness and reliable performance. Unlike standard onions, this variety does not form a bulb; instead, it produces beautiful, slender white stalks paired with crisp, flavorful blue-green tops. With a mild, sweet culinary profile, it is perfect for fresh salads, stir-fries, soups, and garnishes.

'Heshiko' is a non-bulbing, multi-stalk variety that readily divides, providing a continuous harvest of tender green scallions throughout the season. Harvested straight from the garden, Heshiko Bunching Onion brings crisp texture and mild sweetness to every dish. Its slender white stalks and vibrant green tops make a beautiful presentation on the cutting board — a chef’s favorite for authentic Japanese and farm fresh recipes.

•    Flavor: Mild, clean onion taste with a hint of sweetness
•    Texture: Tender white stems and crunchy greens

Sowing & Growing Instructions
•    Sowing Depth: 1/4 inch (6 mm)
•    Seed Spacing: 1/2 inch (13 mm) apart; thin to 2 inches (5 cm) for optimal stalk development.
•    Row Spacing: 12 to 18 inches (30 to 45 cm) apart.
•    Days to Germination: 7 to 14 days
•    Days to Maturity: 60 to 75 days
When to Plant
•    Direct Sowing: Sow outdoors as soon as the soil can be worked in early spring. For a continuous harvest, sow successively every 2 to 3 weeks until mid-summer.
•    Indoor Starting: Start seeds indoors 6 to 8 weeks before the last hard frost. Harden off gently before transplanting outside.
Cultivation
•    Location: Choose a site with full sun to partial shade and rich, well-draining soil.
•    Watering: Maintain consistent soil moisture, especially during germination and early growth stages.
•    Blanching Stalks: To achieve longer, crisp white stalks, gently hill soil up around the base of the plants as they grow.
Harvesting
Harvest entire plants when the stalks reach the diameter of a pencil, or simply snip the green tops as needed to allow the base to continue growing and dividing.
